Plymouth sits on the south bank of the Roanoke River, a few miles above where the river finishes its run out of the Piedmont and empties into the Albemarle Sound. For more than two centuries the county's history has followed the river's: a port, a plantation, a battlefield, a lumber frontier, a mill town, and now a quiet stretch of the Inner Banks known for black bears and black water.
